1. Do I press the whole ornament or just the metal piece?
Answer: You only press the aluminum insert. These Dyecraft Direct ornaments are designed as a two-part system: a durable plastic base/frame and a sublimation-ready aluminum insert.
- The Process: You print your design onto the aluminum insert first. Once it cools, you peel the adhesive backing on the plastic ornament (or use the included adhesive dot) and stick the metal insert into place. Never put the plastic frame in your heat press!
2. Is there a film on the aluminum insert?
Answer: Yes, absolutely. Every aluminum insert provided with our ornaments comes with a protective plastic film—usually clear—on the print side. It is critical that you peel this film off before pressing. If you forget, the film will melt into the coating and ruin the insert. Since these are small pieces, the film can sometimes be hard to see, so we recommend picking at the edge with a fingernail or weeding tool to ensure it's removed.
3. How do I attach the insert to the ornament after pressing?
Answer: Assembly is quick and easy. Our Dyecraft Direct plastic ornaments typically feature a pre-applied peel-and-stick adhesive area (or include a strong adhesive backing).
- Sublimate the aluminum insert and let it cool.
- Remove the paper liner from the adhesive on the ornament body.
- Carefully align the metal insert and press firmly for a few seconds to create a permanent bond.
4. What are the heat press settings for the aluminum inserts?
Answer: Since you are sublimating onto aluminum, you need standard metal settings. We recommend pressing the insert at 400°F (204°C) for 30 seconds with medium pressure.
- Pro Tip: Because the inserts are small and lightweight, use our JM148 heat tape to secure them to your transfer paper so they don't shift when you close the press, which causes "ghosting" (blurry edges).
5. Can I get these in double-sided options?
Answer: Yes! Depending on the specific model, Dyecraft Direct offers both single and double-sided options.
- Single-Sided: Has an adhesive flat area for insert and the rest of it is a spherical ball ornament
- Double-Sided: Comes with one aluminum insert and a clear plastic shell. You sublimate each side separately and assemble the plastic shell for a premium, 360-degree look.
